Highway blockade in Katsina over insecurity killing businesses, traders cry out

The Resident  Of YantumaDanmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State and its surrounding communities have always been at the receiving end whenever angry youths in the area barricade the Katsina–Funtua highway to express their anger over incessant bandits’ attacks in the area.

It was gathered that each time the youth barricade the highway, travellers especially those going to Kaduna, Zaria, Sokoto, Gusau, Funtua and cities in the South and in the East, always use alternative routes such as the Charanchi-Malumfashi-Funtua –Zaria route.

The development consequently led to the loss of income for traders selling fruits and other farm produce at Yantumaki and the surrounding communities.

Also, many commuters from the surrounding communities who could have joined commercial vehicles directly from Yantumaki to their various destinations have to find their ways to other nearby towns such as Dutsinma or Kankara to get vehicles.

Commercial drivers in the town (Yantumaki) equally suffer financial loss whenever there is highway blockade as there are no motor able roads that they can use as alternatives in the area to sell their wares.

Similarly, students of the Federal University, Dutsinma, also share in the discomfort as there would be no commercial vehicles to take them to the permanent campus of the institution located not too far from Yantumaki.

The same scenario played out on Monday, August 16, 2021, when the otherwise sleepy Yantumaki town woke up to a protest by residents and people from neighbouring communities.
