Dial this code now to retrieve your NIN

The Nigerian Communication Commission, abbreviated as NCC, has recently given many SIM card subscribers the shock of a lifetime. It was recently reported that the commission has given directives to network operators across the federation to block the SIMs, of every subscriber who has not registered with the NIN. The abbreviation NIN stands for National Identification Number and it is a method of identification unique to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

A two week ultimatum was issued by the NCC to all network operators in the country. After this two week ultimatum is over, unregistered individual's SIMs would GET BLOCKED!

NIN is a personal identifying number composed of eleven digits. It is assigned to everyone who has registered in the database of the NIMC. You would find this number displayed on the NIMC slip given to those who enrolled.

In order to boost the transparency of SIM registration in Nigeria, all telecom operators have been ordered to make it mandatory for their subscribers to provide a valid National Identification Number. This is so that SIM registration records may be updated.

The ultimatum period starts from today; Wednesday, 16 of December and would end on the 30th of December, 2020. Once this ultimatum is over, unregistered subscribers would have their SIMs blocked.

Many Nigerians didn't take the news positively. It is not very easy to acquire NIN in some regions hence many Nigerians do not have an NIN. Replying to Bashir Ahmad, one Nigerian called the whole scenario "rubbish".

However, Mr Bashir Ahmad was quick to give him a reply. He claimed that the new development was for obvious security reasons. With its implementation comes reduced possibility of security challenges.

As you can see up there, you can actually retrieve your NIN number on your SIM card, provided you have registered. If you have not registered, please go to an NIMC enrollment center to do so.

However, if you have registered before and seem to have forgotten or misplaced your NIN, you can retrieve it by dialing the USSD short code, *346#. The USSD short code works on every mobile phone and is independent of which telecom operator you are subscribed to.

The code however cost a small fee of just 20 Nigerian Naira. You would be charged this amount once you retrieve your NIN.
