A winter-like storm led to at least one death on Thanksgiving Day, closed numerous roadways and left officials warning of waterspouts, floods, hail, lightning and rip currents.

Two important highways — the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine and the 15 Freeway between the Inland Empire and Las Vegas — were closed, reopened and closed again Thursday as snow would fall, be plowed aside and then accumulate again. Heavy snowfall was reported late Thursday.

Some cities set records for their lowest high temperature for a Nov. 28, and more than a half-dozen cities in Southern California set rainfall records, according to Matt Moreland, a National Weather Service meteorologist. He said snow fell as low as the 2,700-foot elevation.

“It’s very low for this time of year,” Moreland said.

More rain was forecast for Friday — a 30% chance in Los Angeles and a 60% chance in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties — before tapering off Friday night in time for Southern California ski season to get underway in earnest at resorts that were inundated by snow this week. The storm will also give way to a warming trend.

Thursday, a motorist was killed and another injured in a two-vehicle wreck during heavy downpours on Redlands Boulevard in Moreno Valley. The California Highway Patrol said the two cars collided near Ironwood Avenue around 12:30 p.m., and one vehicle rolled over, leaving the driver, whose identity was not immediately released, fatally injured.

The other victim suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

A collapsed drain caused the closure of two of four lanes of the eastbound 10 Freeway at Sixth Street in nearby Redlands. Caltrans said workers may close the rest of the lanes if the roadway continues to erode.

"Collapsed drain on EB 10 at 6th St in Redlands. Two of four lanes closed for now. Emergency contract in place for repairs. Expect full closure if it continues to erode."
